BEGINNING IN THE MID 1950'S

Sawgrass Recreation Park was previously a fishing camp. Over the next 30 years it transformed from a fishing camp, into a one boat airboat attraction in the 1970's and finally became one of South Florida's top destinations for visitors in the new millennium. In 2005, shortly after Hurricane Wilma hit, the Soverns' family acquired Sawgrass Recreation Park. Since then, the park has expanded the exhibit areas to allow for the adoption and rescue of more reptiles and mammals. Sawgrass has also expanded community relations, offering an annual scholarship to a local student, and forging partnerships with local schools to educate students about the Florida Everglades.

From the North: Take I-95 South or the Turnpike South to 595 West.

From the South: Take I-95 North or the Turnpike North to 595 West. Then...

On 595 take I-75 North towards Naples. Stay on I-75 North until you come to Exit 23 North (U.S. Highway 27) towards South Bay. We are just two miles to the North on the right hand side of the road. Turn right and cross over the bridge, make another immediate right down into the parking lot. Tickets for the airboat rides and animal exhibits can be purchased in the store. (Yellow building.)

1947: A Franchise is Born

In 1947, the first Shoney’s drive-in restaurant was opened in Charleston, West Virginia. Five years later, the name was changed to Big Boy Restaurants – only to be renamed three years later to what is now known as Shoney’s.

1977: A New Era

30 years after kicking off as a Big Boy franchise, Shoney’s dropped the affiliation, swapping its iconic Big Boy mascot for our very own Shoney bear. As Shoney’s, the family-friendly restaurant expanded steadily, rolling out scores of new locations.

2007: New Leadership

Shoney’s received an advantageous boost, as leading entrepreneur, David Davoudpour purchased the company, instilling new energy, passion and purpose. Mr. Davoudpour demonstrated his deep commitment to bringing this American icon back to its glory days by making Shoney’s the model of excellence. He began with a new vision, focusing on three key principles: simplicity, innovation, and giving back to communities. This became Mr. Davoudpour’s primary mission for Shoney’s.

Now: A Fresh Direction

Under the direction of Shoney’s Chairman and CEO David Davoudpour, we continue to pride ourselves on delicious tasting food, great value and great service.
